I 100% support the death penalty IN THEORY. I completely agree that some

people commit a crime so heinous that death is an appropriate penalty. I have no problem with the idea of 'the state' taking someone's life. I don't consider it to be revenge but a punishment richly earned.

HOWEVER

I end up opposed to the death penalty IN PRACTICE for several reasons.

1. While it's pretty damn clear that this guy is guilty, too many people on death row have subsequently been found to be innocent. I may not go so far as to say "1 person killed wrongly by the state is 1 too many", but we're way beyond 1.

2. Our system has a LOT of automatic appeals, etc. etc. And I don't think that's necessarily wrong, but it often takes a dozen years for someone to finally face the death penalty. In that time period, it's possible that they've changed. Note, not changed enough to deserve parole, but changed enough so that at that point, 10+ years later, I wouldn't be comfortable with the state executing SOME of the people sentenced to death.

- 2b) because of #1, I'm not comfortable with rushing the process to create a significantly shorter time frame.

3. Cost. Because of #2, the death penalty ends up being just as costly, or more, than life in prison.
